When opportunity knocks, open the door!

I recently had the pleasure of interviewing Stacey Poehler, a local writer, publisher, and “Enterprising Mom,” regarding her new business venture.  Stacey has found happiness and fulfillment by working for herself and having a flexible schedule.  A few months ago she began writing for a local magazine called “Our Milton Neighbor”.  Stacey enjoyed the work and she was able to balance it with being a director at BeautyCounter and a busy mom of three.  When the publisher had to relocate from the area, the publication found itself without a leader.  The publisher turned to Stacey since she had already proven herself as a dependable and professional contributor.  Stacey recognized the opportunity that suddenly presented itself and she seized it.  She is now co-publisher of “Our Milton Neighbor” and she has not looked back.

“When opportunity knocks, don’t let fear hold you back.  Open the door and embrace the opportunity that has come forth” – unknown

Get out of your comfort zone.

When asked about her new gig, Stacey said, “I am a little scared about this new responsibility, but I know that being scared is good. It will keep me on my toes and motivate me to work hard so that I can see results and ease my fears!”   New opportunities can push us out of our comfort zone and help us grow.  The more we push, the more we grow.

Hard work creates opportunities

Ann Landers famously said, “Opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, so most people don’t recognize them”.  Thomas Jefferson reportedly said, “The harder I work, the more luck I have”.  Whether you prefer Landers or Jefferson, the lesson is the same – if you work hard, you will be prepared for opportunities that may come your way.   Stacey worked hard to establish herself at the magazine and it paid off.  “Our Milton Neighbor” had accepted article submissions from other contributors during Stacey’s writing tenure, but she stood out as a writer and a business partner.

If you are diligently working at something, I invite you to explore where that hard work might take you.  Take a step back from the day to day and consider a bigger or different picture.  Can your writing lead you to a publishing gig, like Stacey?  Can your travel sales lead to partnerships with businesses or influencers?  Maybe your knowledge of the local real estate market can establish you as a realty expert at community events?

Recognize and follow your passion

Stacey is passionate being a “connector” in her business.  Whether she is connecting a person to a product or service, or connecting businesses to the local community, Stacey has always put an emphasis on helping others.  Her work on the magazine creates many opportunities for Stacey to connect others in our local area, which allows her to capitalize on opportunities that align with her business and her core values.

You can increase your chances of finding opportunities that will be successful for you by actively seeking out opportunities for others and yourself that match up with your core values and things that you are passionate about.  Keep your ideals in mind when evaluating if a new venture is a good fit for you.

Our Milton Neighbor

“Our Milton Neighbor” is a local magazine that showcases local families and events.  The publication provides professional articles as well as pieces written by local residents.   Some of their features are local events and celebrations, news about families and their children, articles about local athletes and artists among us, a kid’s corner written by local children, and a pet corner.

The magazine is highly sought after around town and it’s impact is growing.  One of Stacey’s primary goals is to add new sponsors to the magazine so that the readership can be extended to more neighborhoods in Milton and Alpharetta.

Keep your eyes and ears open to new opportunities.  If you are working hard, becoming an expert in your field or passionate about something you may increase your chances of finding new gigs like Stacey did with “Our Milton Neighbor”.  We’d love to hear from you.  Have you ever capitalized on an unexpected business opportunity?  Do you have an example of how your hard work created an opportunity for you or your business?  Please comment below.
